You can’t have business growth without personal growth. That’s because both come from finding unity between you, your life and your business.
This article is the fourth of a series of seven. Here’s the model that this series of articles builds on:
Speaking in Tongues
One of the reasons it’s challenging to integrate life with business effectively is that sooner or later, we inevitably have to use un-business-like words. So, here’s a friendly warning that I’m about to go in this direction, but I don’t want you to ‘switch off.’ In this part of the model, it looks like I’m not directly addressing the business perspective, but all three views of your world are intimately connected. Every aspect affects each other.
At the junction of ‘you’ and your ‘life’ sits a set of processes that I call ‘weaving your braid.’ The phrasing is unusual, but it is essential to the model. The ‘braid’ is a metaphor developed by Douglas Hofstadter, an American cognitive scientist, to explain interactions between mind, body and life, and how we slide in and out of experiences across them.
Weaving is a reference to how we vary our experiences through processes of:
Reflecting on what we have and identifying potential actions in the context of our values (‘being’)
Choosing to take impactful actions (‘doing’)
Reflecting on outcomes that are the consequences of our actions (‘having’)
These life processes are all influenced by our virtues (courage, justice, humanity, temperance, transcendence, wisdom) and the character strengths that comprise them.
We’re connecting the accelerators I’ve previously identified:
You -personality and character strengths, mental toughness and learning preferences and style
Life – health, wealth, wisdom
They each feed off each other. Your personality and character strengths, mental toughness and learning preferences and style impact your health, wealth and wisdom.
Setting and executing goals to improve your personality and character strengths, mental toughness and learning preferences and style enhances your health, enriches your wealth and expands your wisdom. Equally, enhancing your health, supplementing your wealth and developing your wisdom will improve your personality and character strengths, mental toughness and learning preferences and style. It’s a virtuous loop; it’s the braid.
